Hi.

Welcome to hellothings.com.

After more than ten years of hanging out on or in everything from walls, comics, paintings, shirts, etc… the oh-so adorable Things finally make their website debut.

Things were created when I was in high school (around the ripe old age of sixteen) as doodles on misc. notes to misc. girls and grafitti on misc bathroom stall doors.

Over the years, though, they became so much more to me than just scribbles. They, particularly the hellothings, began to unveil an ever changing story that followed them and their nonverbal adventures. These adventures consisted of random floating, combing, giggling, and sadly hiding; from their only nemesis, the goodbyethings…

The painted images on this site began as toy designs a few years back. But after that fell through, I kept going, revisisting some of my favorite hellothings from over the years as well as creating a whole slew of new ones. Thanks and enjoy.

JAMES.

(p.s. the photoshop images, in all their their horrible glory are some of my most loved of the hellothings computer sketches I do everyday.)

Also to answer some questions before they are asked.

Hellothings? Whaaaa?

Sometimes.

Do “hellothings” have anything to do with ” hello kitty”?

Nope. In fact I didn’t even think of this coincidental usage of the word “hello” until my girlfriend pointed it out last year. The name “hellothings” actually came from a deeply intellectual time in my life (note: this also happened to be around the time I discovered drugs and booze) when I enjoyed the philosophical notion of “Occam’s Razor” a reductive theory that states, in laymans terms, that simplicity is the way to go. Therefore, to keep things simple, I grouped everything into two catergories: things that I would welcome into my life, or say “hello” to (i.e: hamburgers, pugs, iced coffees, etc…), and things that I wouldn’t welcome, thus saying “goodbye” to (i.e: breakups, headaches, pug hamburgers, etc…). Thus, hellothings and goodbyethings were born.

Ugly dolls, anyone?

Yep… there is a similarity. But keep in mind, hellothings were created a long long ago. I figure since cute things are all the rage and since cute things tend to be relatively simply designed, it’s a happy coincidence. Im positive many a folk have images that look similar to these here hellothings or pokemon, ugly dolls, Johen Vasquez doodles etc…

Plus, my main inspiration all them years back were random Japanese things I could get a hold of… especially booska, garamon, namegon, etc… Tsuburaya, you are a genius.

But, yeah, I give mad props to Mr. Horvath and Sun-Min Kim for bringing ugly cuteness into the toy market.

Wow, I so need a hellohting! How much?

Hmmm… sorry to burst your bubble little Tommy, but hellothings don’t actually exist.

But… (warning, here comes my sales pitch…) if you like what you see and want a hellothings painting, I will do commissions… just email me with what you want.

Be warned though… there will be no paintings done of hellothings killing or humping each other… since they don’t kill and don’t have genitals… wait a sec… it appears that some do… let me reword that…. since they don’t kill and don’t have “functional” genitals.
